My sister arrived on a plane tonight, and while I seem to be willing to subject myself (and Mr Crumpet) to several layers of filth, it's not something that I can let visitors see... During the process, I discovered that I have a whole bunch of really cool (well, I think so anyway) cushions that I made a couple of years ago from old t-shirts, scrap material and other fun trims. And here they are for your viewing pleasure:

I also hung some of my Linden Postcard Show paintings on the wall behind the couch. It's now the official Nude Wall:

And considering tonight's couch theme, here's what we'll be watching from it tomorrow night -- my sister's birthday presents:

Mucho rebirth...

I've had a busy time this week. Mostly due to being called by work every. single. day. though than actually accomplishing much. I thought I was "casual", not "on call", but what can you do...

I have managed to get a few bits and pieces done -- I needed to in order to stay sane...

First up, I've finally taken photos of my booty from the Joss Whedon swap on Craftster -- yay! I got a groovy Firefly bag and some very fun Firefly magnets that are now living on my fridge. :)

Next up I finished a hat that I originally made for myself. I wore it a few times before I realised it looked awful. Anyway, it had some eyelet patterning around the edges, so I threaded through some pretty ribbon and yarn, and attached a pompom to the top. I'm giving it to my niece for her birthday, so hopefully it will fit okay and she won't hate it.

I also had some fun making a little doily to sit under my African Violet in the bathroom. It used to sit on a skanky face-washer, so this is a damn sight better. It felt a little strange knitting a lace pattern just for it to be covered up, but I wanted to have some fun. The yarn is some Katia Idea Jeans that I bought in December 2003 when I was first learning to knit, and it has such a beautiful sheen. I used the spiderweb pattern stitch from SnBN coupled with some dropped YOs to make it look all purty. I also knit it in two pieces as a grafting challenge for myself. I don't really know if I did it properly, but it's staying together and that's the main thing. :)

Here it is on its lonesome:

And here it is in its new home. Note the pretty origami flutterby on the violet, and also the Jesus cyclamen (it rose from the dead too...)

Woot!

Yay! I updated my site!

Yes, the rumours are true. I actually, finally have updated my site.

I've added some more paintings and drawings to CrumpArt in the art section, including my four entries to the 2005 Linden Postcard Show, now that the real life show is about to end. I'll be adding some new pages to my shopping section tomorrow, so stay tuned and keep your wallets at the ready...

Speaking of wallets and shopping and people buying paintings, I received my cheque today from my old high school, for the sale of my Theodora painting. Woot! Mucho goodness. I actually sold my biggest, most expensive painting (well, I Hart Wayne is more expensive, but technically it's an embroidery, not a painting), and it now has a very fitting home. I didn't want to sell that one to just anyone, and it's somewhere that it can be appreciated by many.

Anyway, that's it for now. Damn work and getting up early...

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://crumpart.blogspot.com/2005/03/omg-i-updated-my-site.html' title='OMG... Hi Gorte! :)

So here's my second Spiderweb Capelet from Stitch 'n' Bitch Nation. I love this pattern, so much so that I actually don't need to look at the pattern while knitting anymore. This one is the same JJs mohair yarn as the last one I knit, but it's in the Lavender colourway instead of my beloved Fireball. This one is a gift for someone, and I'm knitting it on 12mm needles instead of 10mm. I'm also going to knit one for my niece on the 10mm needles, but less wide, as she's only eight and therefore tiny.

I actually started this on the tram this afternoon, but was so excited to see someone else knitting on public transport (on tiny bamboo DPNs with tiny, very pretty yarn, so I think she was possibly knitting socks... in a 2x2 rib... yes, I'm a knitting nerd... I also spent a lot of time geeking out over the few knitted garments in House of Flying Daggers before my tram trip, but back to the story...) that I cast 92 stitches, then knit a row onto the wrong needles, and had to frog the whole thing when I realised. And even after just one row, mohair is a bitch to frog...

Don't read this post if you're Urbankitty!

There's a lot I want to blog about today, but I might do another post later with all that, and just make this one picture heavy...

I'll start with some of my favourite birthday presents from last week!

Turtles! Knee socks! Turtles on knee socks! Dinosaur coat knitting patterns for puppies! Woot!

In other knitting news, I've finished my first Hurry Up Spring armwarmer from SnBN. I think I'll frog the purple on the thumb gusset and make it green though, but I'll decide for sure when I've finished the second armwarmer.

I loved the Noro Kureyon yarn from the armwarmers so much that I did some freeform knitting with it, inspired by my new copy of Unexpected Knitting by Debbie New. This book is so awesome and inspiring. I totally recommend it to everyone.

My little freeform piece somehow happened to turn out to my exact cupsize and shape... I toyed with making it into a dress, but I think I'll aim towards a piece of mermaid art instead.

And now for something I didn't make myself, but received in a Glitter swap for reusable grocery shopping bags:

Hopefully the bag I made will arrive at it's destination soon. I hope it hasn't gone missing mid-post... I have a picture of it somewhere, but I'm not sure where that is at the minute.

In other swap news, I'm also taking part in the Joss Whedon swap over at Craftster. I haven't received a package yet, but it's on the way, as is the one I sent. I bound my first book ever to make Simon's Diary from Firefly (more of an inspired piece than a replica...) and also did a drawing of Giles from Buffy. Hopefully they'll be well received. :)

I attempted the coptic stitch for binding. Having never seen it done and only following instructions from the internet, I don't know how well I succeeded, but the book seemed to stay together well enough, which is the main thing... plus I got to use my drill to make the holes in the cover. Yay! The image/writing on the cover was done with a linocut print, and the end pages are made from old Astor Theatre posters, of which I'm sure Joss would approve. :) The quotes are from Jayne's character as he pretended to read Simon's diary.

More later...

Oh No! So I tossed and turned in bed for two hours before heading off for my Monday morning swim. As such, I was grumpy before I even walked out the door, which was exacerbated by greeting a mean looking dog hanging around our front gate (I love dogs, but am wary of all but seven or so in this place, because the camp dogs are scungy and get mean pack-mentality, and sadly, many of the whitefella dogs are trained to be frightening...) and an extremely insistent and annoying fly that dive-bombed my head from the moment I stepped outside. So I walked along feeling all sorry for myself, then as I rounded the corner I was hit with the most beautiful sunrise I've ever seen. I know, sunrises and sunsets are "just an illusion caused by the world spinning 'round", but damn, what a fucking illusion.

For ten minutes I walked along in awe, trying to glimpse as much through the treetops as I could. You couldn't actually see the sun, but a bank big fluffy clouds on the horizon topped with astounding golden outlines, and ray lines from the sun reaching out into the space above them.

I don't know if a sunrise can get you high, but I swam 30 laps after that.

Admittedly the pool is only 20 metres long, but that's still 20 more laps than the 10 I was struggling for when I started swimming two weeks ago...

Speaking of seeing amazing things, yesterday we spotted a frill neck lizard on the road as we were driving for a swim at Airforce Crossing. It saw us and ran up a tree, and we stopped to have a look. Frill neck lizards are so cool. Actually, I think most lizards are cool, but frill necks especially.

In other news, I finished my cardiganised boobholder! Woot! Well, I need to block it and add a button, but I can't do either of those things until I'm back in Melbourne this weekend. Here it is, with a close-up of the yarn for good measure.

I also finished the front of my Vest Dressed Girl number and have started on the back, so hopefully I'll have another FO picture to show soon!

Deja vu Deja vu!

OMG, my last post, obviously aptly titled Deja vu published twice. I'm living in a place called Wadeye (or Port Keats), the little red star on that map, until the 26th of February. Here's a closer map of the area. Wadeye (pronounced Wad-air) is part of Aboriginal land in the Daly River Region. The town itself is inland, but it's a fairly short drive to the coastline. You need special permission from the Aboriginal people of Wadeye to come here, and I'm working at the school helping my sister (a teacher) with her year 12 class. It's the first time they have ever done year 12 here, which is pretty exciting. I help out with computers and art, and am also helping develop a website for the class as they'll be running an art business as part of their coursework this year.

Anyway, as I'm pretty far away from everything, and Wadeye is a town with a general store, a medical clinic, a school, a police station, a tiny airport (you have to fly here in the wet season as the road to Darwin gets cut off by flooding) and not much else, I bought along lots of yarn to keep me occupied. This week I've started on a cabled vest from one of my mum's '70's patterns. Because, of course, I want to Be a Vest Dressed Girl. :p

Here's the progress so far:

And because we've been doing printmaking in class, I've also been working on a lino print:

We don't have a printing press, so I've been busy trying to come up with the best way to print this. I haven't quite succeeded yet, but I'm getting there. Hopefully I'll have some better copies of the print in a week or so.

In other art news, I didn't win anything in the Linden Postcard show, but as they had something like 2900 entries (according to my mother), that's not really surprising. Apparently I Hart Wayne is hanging in a really good spot though, and I'm looking forward to seeing the show when I get home. Hopefully my works will also have some little red 'sold' dots by then as well!

A quick update...

The phones have been down here the last few days, so I haven't been able to post much. I believe I have around 25 bites so far, at least, which is always fun.

Anyway, it's wet season, but hasn't rained in once in the four days I've been here, so we've had two trips out to the beaches. Here are a few photos I took on the second trip.

I've also managed to make a tiny dent into the stash of yarn I bought with me. Two of these scarves are made from the remainder of Fireball, and the middle one was a UFO from a while back. I'm still sad though.

I wish I had a picture of her with me to post, but I don't.

Anyone available should go to my house in Melbourne and hug my other two dogs for me, because I can't for another four weeks. :(

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://crumpart.blogspot.com/2005/01/rip-zoe.html' title='R.I.P. I finally handed in my four entries for the Linden Postcard Show. Of course, my final entry didn't get completed until 3pm, at which point I had to stretch it over a canvas frame then secure hanging devices on the back of each piece. So at 4pm, I headed out the door and to the tram stop.

I took a few more photos before I left though:

Here is I Hart Wayne in her frame:

Someone from Craftster also asked to see some close-up shots of the stitching, so here they are:

And as if that wasn't enough pictures in one post, here's another -- the piece I completed today, called (No) Threads It's a stencil and embroidery on linen. Be warned, it's also a very nude man, hence the buffer space...

And that is all. I fly to Darwin at 7:10am tomorrow morning, so to compound my current state of exhaustion, I have to get up at some ungodly hour to get to the airport on time. And I still have to make two bags before I go, and finish packing. Oh joy. Wish me luck.

The moment of truth...

Here she is. I also added an extra six rows of ribbing at the bottom so I could have a folded-up brim, and added an extra round of the cable pattern before starting the decreases to make the hat longer.

Cassie's Skirt

Here's Cassie's skirt finished. I have been busy with some other stuff that is postable though, so yay!

First up, here's the progress I've made on The Embroidery. Not much, I know, but that patch of green in the top left corner did take a while. I did it in some downtime during our trip to Phillip Island Nature Park to see the adorable penguins. I also made a knitted scrunchy-washer type thing to give to Bec and Justin, who were kind enough to let us stay at their house, but didn't get a photo of it. It was a sort of lacy purple cotton tube with green i-cords at either end -- the idea is to put soap inside then tighten the ends to trap the soap. I made it up as I went along, so hopefully it works as I imagined.

Speaking of lacy knits, here's the scarf I was working on the other week. I haven't touched it for a while, but will finish it fairly soon. I love making these scarves -- they're so easy and beautiful, and get many, many comments. It's based on this pattern from Knitty.

And a close-up...

And the main reason I haven't done much on The Embroidery? You guessed it, Christmas gifts. For my two nieces, I'm making skirts, and for my two nephews, I'm making shorts. They'll all have embroidery patches on them, and I'm using patterns from Jenny Hart's Stitch-it-kit. I ordered it online a while back, but was so excited to see it in a book shop in Melbourne yesterday! The shop I saw it at was Reader's Feast, so go, buy it now! Anyway, Mikayla is getting the Kitty, Cassie wants the Hula Girl, Lachie will get an Anchor, and Sam is getting shorts that say "Mine", in reference to his favourite line from Finding Nemo. Here's what's done so far:

I know something you don't know

I've been very busy this week, but haven't added a single stitch to The Embroidery. It was rather frightening and I don't really know how I went, as the panel of interviewers try their damndest (is that a word?) to give no indication of their feelings whatsoever. I'll find out in a couple of weeks. Since then, I've been winding down and doing a bit more work.

Here's the latest on The Embroidery, which I really should have progressed further on...

I also finished knitting my Very First Jumper (jumper = sweater for those of you who are confused). It's a top down raglan knit entirely in the round, therefore being completely seamless! Woot! I measured up a jumper I had, measured up my guage, did all the maths and started knitting away. The yarn is Four Seasons 'Zebra', which I bought on sale for $0.99 a ball. I think I only used about eight balls, so I got an ace jumper for cheap! Yay!

I've also been knitting a scarf on the tram... but forgot to take a photo of it. So, later. But now, here's a nudie painting warning...!

Okay, here are the two paintings I've been working on for the Linden postcard show:

That's it for now -- I have to head to my life drawing class, but I promise to post more this coming week than I did in the one just gone...

A productive day.

Here's the latest update on my embroidery. Every time I think I've done a lot of it I step back a little and look at all the white space still surrounding the tiny mass of colour.

Speaking of colour masses, here's what I've done so far with those blank canvasses from earlier (the second pic is a detail shot, but unfortunately now that the liquid-y blueness has dried, it's not looking quite so impressive. I have my university admission interview on Tuesday morning, and I have a lot to get done before my folio is ready (work on my website, a couple of paintings, organise life drawings in my big folder thingy, visit galleries to catch up on the latest in the art world, do as much as I can on the embroidery...)

Speaking of the embroidery, here is the latest progress report:

And just for fun, here is one of the pictures from my exhibition earlier this year. So here are a few things I've been working on lately...

Some Christmas gift facecloths for my grandma, knitted in Heirloom cotton yarn using a pattern from the Dishcloth Boutique.

The boobholder I made to wear to work. It turned out a little big, but I remedied this by threading a ribbon through the eyelot holes I made all around the bottom, and lacing it up tight instead of using a button. So far I've had fantastic comments every time I've worn it, and the ribbon has been what people like the most, which is kind of amusing. :) I nearly ruined this top completely when watching the Australian election. I was getting rather angry and made a big stuff-up that I didn't know how to fix, but thankfully Kym's mum did know. Thanks for that. :)

I plan to enter some artworks into the Linden Gallery Postcard competition this year. I stretched these canvases yesterday. My dropsheet was the pattern I drew up for a jumper I'm knitting -- the body is done and I'm about a third of the way through the sleeves, so it should be done soon. Yay! Anyway, I don't know what I'm going to paint on the canvasses yet. Perhaps something inspired by the life drawing classes I've been taking.

I do know I want to enter this though.

Hopefully the person/people in the original photo won't mind. I wanted to get a start on it before I asked them, just incase it turned out crap, but I'm liking it so far. :)

Anyway, that's it for now, as I really should go to bed.

Hmmmm...

I have a blog.

And all so I could post comments on other people's blogs...
